Homework Policy

The purpose of homework is to reinforce concepts and skills. As well as help strengthen students study skills.  Students will write their homework in their agendas each morning, Monday through Thursday.  Some projects may require weekend work.  Additionally, students will be expected to read each night for at least 20 minutes.  Students who do not keep up with their homework assignments fall behind.  It is no fun to play CATCH UP!

Other components of homework include:

  • Reading Homework:

Students will be given a reading comprehension passage on Monday that will be due on Friday. Be sure they use their UNRAAVEL strategies. These strategies are listed towards the end of this policy packet.

  • Reading/Spelling Journal:

During the 20 minutes of nightly reading students should record a brief summary in their Reading/Spelling journal on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday of each week, students will complete Spelling homework by choosing two of the “19 Ways to Practice Spelling” homework. This also is listed towards the back of this policy packet. During the first week of school this will be modeled in class. (Mon.-Tuesday summary and Wed- Thursday Spelling practice.) Second week of school the Reading/Spelling journal will come home on Mondays and should be returned to school on Fridays. I will check the Reading/Spelling Journal and return back to students on Monday with feedback to their summaries and Spelling practice.

  • Math Homework:

Nightly Math homework is given out to students Monday- Thursday.  It’s expected to be returned the following day.

Note:These assignments will be written in your child’s agenda and are due the next day. Please remember (unless otherwise noted) that homework is practice work to reinforce skills taught in class that day, not graded work, so it may be challenging at times when the concept is new. Also students should use UNRAAVEL strategies on all Reading and Math word problem homework.  (UNRAAVEL bookmarks are attached).

  • Special projects.
