O.W.L. NOTEBOOK

What does O.W.L. stand for?

Organized Weekly Learning.

What is the O.W.L. Notebook?

The O.W.L. Notebook is a 1 ½ -2 inch binder that holds everything that is important for my second graders and their parents. Every student will be given a complete notebook during the first week of school. Each student will be responsible for their notebook - they must take it home every night and bring it back every morning.

What goes in the O.W.L. Notebook?

There are multiple sections of the notebook:

Homework

Students will put their homework in this pocket EVERY MONDAY. When they get home they will complete it and immediately put it back in the same folder. When they arrive in class FRIDAY, they will take their homework out and put it in the “HOMEWORK” tray.

Planner

Students will receive an agenda that will be kept in their notebook. The student will be required to record their homework for the week in their planner when they come into the classroom each Monday. This planner is an important tool to help students learn organization skills.

Reading Response Log/Spelling Notebook

Students will use a spiral notebook to record the date, title, and a minimum 4-sentence summary for a book they read for 20 minutes on Monday and Wednesday night. There should be 2 entries a week. The spiral notebook will be turned in each Friday morning and returned to the student each Monday morning with a weekly homework grade. This will begin the second week of school – the first week we will practice in class so that the students and parents have an understanding of what is expected when the log comes home.

At the beginning of every Wonders Reading unit students will be given a spelling and vocabulary list, which includes the words for all lessons in that unit. This list is to stay in the plastic sheet protector in the students’ notebook so that they always know where it is. It can be used to study at home and for lessons in class.

Schedule

Important Papers

This pocket of the notebook will contain any papers that are being sent home from the school. This includes newsletters, flyers, letters, progress reports, etc. If there are any papers that need to be signed and returned, they should be placed back in this folder to come back to school. Students will be responsible for handing in all papers that are returning to school.
